Replacing your Alside casement windows with Alside double hung windows or Awning replacement windows can be a tricky task, especially if you have no idea how to do it. It is more than taking out an old frame and putting in a new one; you have to consider the crank hardware and the architectural design. Luckily, there are ways to find help. Below are three steps to help you change your old Alside casement windows with Alside double hung windows or Awning replacement windows:
Step 1: Get the proper measurements
Before ordering a replacement window, you have to get the right size. Start by measuring the width of the window opening from the inside track to where the sash meets the closing of the frame. Then simply subtract half an inch from it. Repeat for the height.
Step 2: Remove the hinges, molding, and casement window
There are two kinds of hinges that support Alside casement windows: loose-pin hinges or fixed-pin hinges. For the former, a flat blade screwdriver is used to loosen the screws. The latter requires undoing the screws that hold the leaf of the hinge attached to the sash of the frame. For Alside casement windows with molding, place a putty knife in between the gap of the molding and the extension jam, then gently tap with a wooden mallet or hammer. Work around all sides. After that, carefully use a crowbar in between the loosened extension jam and molding to remove the casement window.
Step 3: Install the replacement window
Before placing the Alside double hung windows or Awning replacement windows, you have to prepare the window opening. Using a stiff brush and chisel, remove old caulk and paint debris from the window. Set the replacement window into the opening. Properly place it onto the sill then push the rest of the window up and in. Finally, secure windows with the screws provided through the holes using a screw gun.
